There are many advanced courses available to both new and experienced riders. Whilst any additional training should help improve both rider skill and safety, some courses are also recognized by insurance companies and can reduce your insurance premium.
The IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) have the most recognised course in terms of seeking a motorcycle insurance discount. The course currently costs £85 and is available for both cars and bikes, with a £10 price reduction to encourage under 25s. Training is carried out by knowledgeable volunteers. Check out the Skills for Life page at www.iam.org.uk.
RoSPA runs like the IAM. Although a smaller organisation, the RoSPA Gold award is considered the highest civilian riding qualification in the UK. RoSPA Gold is the riding standard required to become an advanced instructor yourself. Some insurance companies reward it accordingly with a large insurance discount. For further information check out www.roada.org.uk.
RideDrive offer several courses from a 6 hour Advanced Intro to their 3 day Accredited Training Course - the one you need for an insurance discount. Training is carried out by professionals with massive expertise. For further information on RideDrive visit their website at www.advanced-motorcycle-training.co.uk.
Mac Rider Training offer a similar spectrum of courses as RideDrive, with a similar top level of professional instruction. Mac have a more expensive daily rate but offer good reductions if there are two of you taking the course. Some companies grant reduced motorbike insurance for qualified Mac Riders.
BMF also offer a range of courses. Their RiderPlus award is aimed at new riders and is an excellent supplement to the skills gained during DAS. However it is necessary to take the BMF Blue Ribband to find cheaper bike insurance. Read more at www.bmf.co.uk.
BikeSafe is an initiative run by Police Forces around the United Kingdom. They offer a good intro to advanced riding to help reduce motorcycle accident casualties. The courses allow police riders to pass on their knowledge, skills and experience. They are a cheap option, without the added benefit of insurance discounts, however the chance to have your riding assessed and gain positive feedback from the police and other advanced motorcyclists is valuable in itself. See the website at www.bikesafe.org.uk.
QuoteA wholeheartedly endorse advanced training and safe riding. We will endeavor to find cheap motorbike insurance for customers who take their safety seriously.
